1 - Saturday 29 September Reykjavik (Iceland)
Reykjavik is the most northerly capital in the world. The wooden buildings of the old town sit beside lively, modern Reykjavik which has excellent museums, galleries and contemporary outdoor geo-thermal pools. There are superb viewing decks in the lovely church of Hallgr'mskirkja, built to resemble lava flow. The Imagine Peace Tower opposite the harbour was built by Yoko Ono as a memorial to John Lennon and emits a tower of light during the last three months of the year.

The park is dominated by 2600-ft Gros Morne mountain, a part of the Long Range, and is a spectacular area of alpine plateau, fjords, glacial valleys, lakes, and waterfalls fed by snow-melt in the summer. The town is growing as a centre of the film industry, and is home to the Atlantic Studios Cooperative.

The old city of Quebec is situated on the St Lawrence River and is dominated by the 19th-century hotel of Chateau Frontenac and its huge red brick and green-roofed tower. Tours by horse-drawn carriage take visitors to the charming Quartier Petit-Chaplain beside Old Port, and the cobbled streets and chic boutiques of the Lower Town. A spectacular funicular links the Lower and Upper Towns. Six miles outside Quebec are the Montmorency Falls, one and half times higher than Niagara and crossed by a suspension bridge.
11 - Tuesday 09 October Montreal (Canada) 0800
Montreal sits on the St Lawrence River, and combines the flavours of North America with the culture of France. Old Montreal has a strong caf' culture, interesting shops and the Jean-Talom Market in Little Italy. The grand City Hall can be found near the port, and early high-rise commercial buildings can be seen on the Place d'Armes. Montreal has many art galleries and museums, and the 19th-century Basilica of Notre Dame.
