Montreal sits on the St Lawrence River, and combines the flavours of North America with the culture of France. Old Montreal has a strong caf' culture, interesting shops and the Jean-Talom Market in Little Italy. The grand City Hall can be found near the port, and early high-rise commercial buildings can be seen on the Place d'Armes. Montreal has many art galleries and museums, and the 19th-century Basilica of Notre Dame.

The old city of Quebec is situated on the St Lawrence River and is dominated by the 19th-century hotel of Chateau Frontenac and its huge red brick and green-roofed tower. Tours by horse-drawn carriage take visitors to the charming Quartier Petit-Chaplain beside Old Port, and the cobbled streets and chic boutiques of the Lower Town. A spectacular funicular links the Lower and Upper Towns. Six miles outside Quebec are the Montmorency Falls, one and half times higher than Niagara and crossed by a suspension bridge.

Saguenay is situated at the head of the scenic Saguenay Fjord, a glacial valley below the mountains of Valin. This area of Quebec is renowned for its natural beauty and the St Lawrence Marine Park, where rare blue whales and belugas are sometimes seen. Villages line the fjord, including L'Anse-Saint-Jean which has an historic covered bridge.

Charlottetown is a Victorian-era city on Prince Edward Island and is the county seat of Queen's County. Tours of the town can be taken by double-decker bus or horse-drawn trolley, which takes in the historic Prince Street area and its clapper-board houses. Visits may be offered to the homestead of Lucy Maud Montgomery which inspired her to write 'Anne of Green Gables'.

Sydney is Canada's third-largest city, located on picturesque Cape Breton Island. It was founded in 1785 by British Loyalists and has a Scottish flavour ' the Highland Village at Hector's Point is a tribute to the Gaelic heritage of Nova Scotia. Nearby Baddeck is on the shore of Bras d'Or Lake and was once the summer home of Alexander Graham Bell. Other visits might include Fortress Louisbourg, which is a living museum where locals dress in period costume.

Halifax was Canada's first British town, founded in 1749 and a gateway to Nova Scotia's rugged coastline and picturesque countryside. The coastline is famed for its string of well-preserved lighthouses, including the much-photographed example at Peggy's Cove. Halifax is overlooked by the citadel of Fort George, and has a boardwalk with restaurants, shops and museums.

The attractive and wealthy town of Bar Harbor is situated on Mount Desert Island, a peaceful area of spectacular coastal, mountain and woodland scenery within Acadia National Park. Seafood restaurants are plentiful in this lobster fishing port, and there are a variety of shops and galleries. Boat trips are sometimes available from the town pier, sailing into the gulf of Maine to spot humpback and minke whales.

Boston is a key port for New England cruises. Dubbed the 'Cradle of Liberty' for its part in the American War of Independence, historic Boston can be explored by following the Freedom Trail to the Old State House, Old North Church and the cobbled streets of Beacon Hill, where the bar which featured in 'Cheers' can be found. The famous Filene's Basement department store on Washington Street is a favourite with shoppers.

New York City is a paradise for shoppers and home to the legendary stores of Bloomingdales, Bergdorf's and Macy's and a string of fashion houses on Madison Avenue. Landmarks not to miss are Times Square and its neon signage, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Station where the popular Oyster Bar serves up 30 varieties.

Other places of interest include the vibrant area of Little Havana, the World Heritage Site of Everglades National Park an hours' drive away and the tropical reef of Biscayne National Park.
